A Note on Terminology
Strictly speaking, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church maintains two formal seminaries offering a full course of theological education and pastoral formation for the priesthood: the St. Dionysius Orthodox Theological Seminary at Kottayam and St. Thomas Orthodox Theological Seminary at Nagpur. Seminarians from the Church in the United States additionally pursue formal theological studies at two Eastern Orthodox seminaries in the U.S. The remaining institutions listed below do not offer formal theological instruction or pastoral formation in this sense; rather, they serve to guide and accompany those discerning a vocation to the priesthood, and on a limited basis—at the direction of the local bishop—host candidates for short courses of preparation ahead of ordination.
