Formed in 2009 and headquartered near Houston, the Diocese of Southwest America serves the southern, midwestern and western United States, with growing missions in South America.
The diocese's roots lie in the 1960s and 1970s, when Malayali Orthodox Christians emigrated from Kerala to North America. Their scattered communities formed ecumenical fellowships that became parishes under the Diocese of Bombay in 1976. In 1979 the Holy Synod established the American Diocese under its first Metropolitan, Thomas Mar Makarios, and over the next three decades the Church grew rapidly across the continent.
To manage this extent, Baselios Mar Thoma Didymos I issued Order No. 145/2009 on 1 April 2009, dividing the American Diocese into the Northeast and Southwest dioceses. Alexios Mar Eusebios was first Diocesan Metropolitan of Southwest America until 2017 and established its centre at the Urshlem Indian Orthodox Christian Center in Beasley, Texas, outside Houston. After a transitional period under Assistant Metropolitan Zacharias Mar Aprem, Thomas Mar Ivanios was enthroned as permanent Metropolitan in October 2022.
Governed by the 1934 MOSC Constitution, the diocese has dozens of parishes and congregations across the Southern, Midwestern and Western United States. It also has missions in Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador, where independent Catholic and Anglican communities have requested to join the Church.
