Established in 2024 and headquartered in Toronto, the Diocese of Canada is the Church's newest North American diocese, serving a rapidly growing community with few clergy.
The Malankara Orthodox presence in North America began in the mid-twentieth century, as faithful from Kerala emigrated for education and employment. The expanding Canadian congregations initially fell under the American Diocese established in 1979. In 1993, the Diocese of Europe, UK and Canada was formed under Thomas Mar Makarios, bringing certain Canadian congregations under its jurisdiction. Following the division of the American territory in 2009, the Canadian parishes were divided by geography between the Diocese of Northeast America and the Diocese of Southwest America.
In view of the rapid and continuous growth of the community and the distinct pastoral needs of the country, the Holy Episcopal Synod and the Malankara Association Managing Committee recommended a separate administrative territory. On 1 November 2024, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, established the Diocese of Canada by Kalpana No. 267/2024. Headquartered in Toronto, it was placed under the guidance of the Catholicos, with H.G. Zachariah Mar Nicholovos appointed Assistant Metropolitan. The diocese currently has few priests; in one instance a single priest serves as vicar of nine congregations.
