Established in 2009 and based at Muttontown, New York, the diocese serves over 20,000 faithful and is the only diocese outside India with property disputes with the schismatic faction.
The Orthodox presence traces to the mid-twentieth century, when pioneer priests and laity emigrated to the United States for higher education, leading to local congregations in the 1970s. In 1976 the Holy Synod placed these communities under the Diocese of Bombay, and in 1979 it established a single American Diocese under its first Metropolitan, Thomas Mar Makarios. The Church grew rapidly under Mathews Mar Barnabas, enthroned in 1993, and Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, who joined as Assistant Metropolitan in 2002.
In 2009 the Holy Episcopal Synod divided the territory into the Southwest American Diocese and the Diocese of Northeast America. After Mar Barnabas retired, Zachariah Mar Nicholovos was enthroned as Diocesan Metropolitan in May 2011, with headquarters at the Indian Orthodox Church Center, Muttontown, New York. The diocese has over 20,000 faithful in several northeastern states.
It is notable that the Metropolitan was formerly a member of the schismatic faction who accepted the 1934 Constitution and led hundreds of families from that faction back to the canonical authority of the Catholicos. This produced several property disputes, making it the only diocese outside India with clashes and litigation with the schismatics.
