Established in 1982 to serve Thrissur and Palakkad, the diocese was created to draw schismatic members back to canonical authority and is known for its unity efforts.

The Diocese of Thrissur was established in 1982 to serve the faithful of Thrissur and Palakkad districts, with 32 parishes and 26 priests. It was created so that schismatic members and parishes in the territories of the Kochi and Malabar dioceses could return to canonical authority, an effort led by Yuhanon Mar Meletius, himself formerly a schismatic bishop.
On 26 December 1990 its first Metropolitan took independent charge. The Gedseemon Orthodox Bishop's House at Mannuthy, Thrissur, begun under him, was completed and consecrated on 20 July 1995. Under Metropolitans such as H.G. Yuhanon Mar Meletius the diocese has expanded beyond sacramental duties: it established an upper primary school in Palakkad, the "Anveshi" community development project, and the "St. Mary's Unity Chapel" at its headquarters, symbolising efforts toward unity with the schismatic faction in Kerala.
