The Ministry of the Deacon
In the Malankara Church the deacon holds the first degree of the sacred ministry. Only a full deacon may take the censer during the Holy Qurbana to assist the priest at the altar. Deacons also wear the phiro, a distinctive cap that marks their rank.
Altar Servers and Acolytes
Because deacons have long been few in number, altar servers or acolytes who hold no rank of deacon have come to assist the priest, a practice now widespread in parishes and generally attributed to Latin influence. The Church’s own order, however, reserves this service to the ordained deacon.
The Archdeacon of the Malankara Church
From the early centuries of Saint Thomas Christianity in Kerala until the sixteenth century, the community was led chiefly not by foreign bishops but by a native leader, the Archdeacon (Jatikk Kartavyan), who held great spiritual, social and political authority. After the Coonan Cross Oath of 1653, in which the community rejected Portuguese Roman Catholic dominance, the Archdeacon was raised to the episcopate as Mar Thoma I, and leadership passed from archidiaconal governance to the succession of Malankara Metropolitans.
