Formed in 1985 from parishes of Thumpamon, Niranam and Kollam, the Diocese of Chengannur is known for its vocations, missionary and charitable ministries.

The Diocese of Chengannur was constituted on 10 March 1985 under Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews I, with some fifty parishes drawn from the Thumpamon, Niranam and Kollam dioceses. It extends over parts of the Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts, from Kallunkal in the north to Pazhakulam in the south.
H.G. Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasios Kizhakkethalakkal, an eminent educationist and pioneer priest, was appointed first Metropolitan on 1 August 1985 and led the diocese for over three decades until his death in August 2018. Under his leadership the Bethel Aramana at Chengannur, originally founded by Puthencavu Geevarghese Mar Philoxenos, was developed into a modern multi-storey administrative headquarters and diocesan centre.
After his death, the diocese was administered directly by the Catholicoi, Baselios Marthoma Paulose II and then Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, assisted by H.G. Dr. Mathews Mar Thimotheos, who assumed charge as diocesan Metropolitan in November 2022. The diocese is known for its spiritual and community wings, including the Daivavili Sangam vocations nursery, the Suvisesha Sangam missionary fellowship and the Asraya Social and Charitable Society.
