Diocese of Bangalore

Formed in 2009 from the Diocese of Madras, the Diocese of Bangalore serves Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as well as Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah in the Emirates.

History

In 1938 a diocese for regions outside Kerala (Bahya Kerala Bhadrasanam) was formed, and in 1976 it was divided into the dioceses of Bombay, Madras and Delhi. Bangalore remained part of the Diocese of Madras until 1 April 2009. Zachariah Mar Dionysius served as diocesan Metropolitan until his death in 1997, after which H.G. Dr. Yakob Mar Irenios assumed charge of the Diocese of Madras and led it until the formation of the Diocese of Bangalore.

In 2010 the Church reorganised the parishes of the Bangalore, Malabar and Sulthan Bathery dioceses and formed the new Diocese of Brahmavar. Ten parishes of Bangalore in the Brahmavar–Mangalore region were transferred to it. The diocese today covers Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and the Emirates of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
